PRODUCING   AIRPLANES

As manager of producing airplanes my team and I are responsible for making 200 piper clubs each year for distribution to children at area hospitals. To meet this quantity we adopted a design objective to make it readily producible with a consistent size and appearance.
Since the Plane has 6 parts (pictured below) we had to take a look at each part to determine  how to meet this design objective.

BODY OF PLANE                                  WING                                       TAIL ASSEMBLY                         LANDING GEAR                           PROPELLER

To accomplish this,we made templates(pictured below)  for items with curved surfaces such as the body, wings, and tail parts. We draw around the templates onto the raw material, then saw the excess material away but "leave the line" so the piece can be sanded to the line thus assuring uniformity

BODY TEMPLATE                  WING TEMPLATE                    RUDDER TEMPLATE                    TAIL TEMPLATE                         LANDING GEAR                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         TEMPLATE

ASSEMBLY

All assembly is done using jigs(some pictured below) which allows us to consistently locate and glue the wing, tail assembly, and landing gear onto the body. Sub-assembly jigs are used to assemble the tail assembly and the two piece propeller prior to installation on the plane body
